Ivana Ljubić is Professor of Foundations of Operations Research at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business in Vienna, Austria, a position she has held since September 2026. Prior to joining WU Vienna, she was Professor of Operations Research at ESSEC Business School in Paris, where she was appointed in September 2015.
She obtained her habilitation in Operations Research from the University of Vienna in 2013 and her PhD in Computer Science from TU Wien in 2004. Before pursuing her academic career, she spent two years working in industry on portfolio optimization. She subsequently held an academic position at the University of Vienna until 2015. Throughout her career, she has also been a visiting researcher or professor at several leading institutions, including Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Maryland, TU Berlin, TU Dortmund University, and Université Paris Dauphine–PSL.
Ivana Ljubić has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the European Journal of Operational Research and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Computers & Operations Research. She is currently an Area Editor for Transportation Science and an Associate Editor for Operations Research and Networks. She previously served as a guest editor for the European Journal of Operational Research and Annals of Operations Research. She also served as Chair of the INFORMS Telecommunications Section.
Her research focuses on network design, combinatorial optimization, optimization under uncertainty, and bilevel optimization. She develops and applies mathematical optimization methods, particularly mixed-integer linear and nonlinear programming, to challenging problems arising in telecommunications, transportation, logistics, network design, data and distribution networks, social networks, and bioinformatics.
Her research has been recognized through several fellowships and awards, including a Doctoral Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (DOC, 2003–2004), the PhD Award of the Austrian Society for Operations Research (2005), a Hertha Firnberg Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) (2007–2010), and an APART Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2011–2013).
